Sundays Art: Pre-Raphaelites Love's Shadow 1867

Frederick Sandys 1829-1904

Mary Emma Jones was a London actress she was Sandy's favorite model. She also his lover at this time eventually the two married and later had ten children. This piece was made while the impoverished Sandy's spent time living with Dante Rossetti. Rossetti was renowned for his generosity toward his fellow artist. The relationship turned sour when Rossetti accused Sandy's of plagiarism.

I like this one because she looks so awry or a bit stressed like seeing a lover with another woman after he gave her a flower.

  1. Holy crap her facial expression is so different from most Pre-Raph paintings. Great find!

  2. I agree, Ash! I've always adored this painting precisely because the pose is so different from the idealized image of women that the Pre-Raphaelites generally painted. It just catches you up. This is a very specific woman and she's in a genuine snit.

Imagine posing like that for hours! :)

  3. I know I can not imagine posing like that for hours on end. I too really like this one for the unique pose.

  4. Wow, she is just so EXPRESSIVE. I think she's irritated from having to sit there with a piece of greenery in her mouth for hours on end.

  6. I know she does look a bit fiery, auburn with a mix of red hair. The hair cracks me up now that I look at it again it looks like big 80's hair.
